Discussion Post One

My favorite part of The Book Thief so far is the narration. It's a very interesting twist that the novel is narrated by death. I also think it's rather interesting how "Death" is neither a cold or evil narrator. In fact he has a rather dry sense of humor and treats that fact that he collects dead peoples' "souls" as more of an unfortunate necessity rather than something he enjoys. Liesel on the other hand I find to be a far less interesting character. She does nothing very spontaneous and doesn't have many interesting or dynamic character traits. That's not to say I don't like Liesel, I just don't find her very captivating. It's much more interesting when Death narrates about his thoughts and there is less dialougue between Liesel and the other characters.

  1. I like the death part a lot too. I agree with what you said about death treating his job as an unfortunate necessity. It keeps the book from being too grim because if death was evil, it would make it harder to read.

  2. I completely agree with Joe and Eliza. I at first thought it would be a tough read when i heard the narrator was death, but death really has a huge sense of humor and gives the novel a light tone.

  3. I agree with all of you. i think that death is a really interesting character and a lot lighter than you would expect him to be. i like how you addressed that his job is and unfortunate necessity rather than something you would expect him to enjoy. I agree with what you said about Liesel, however i think she is a little more captivating and will become more captivating as the book goes on.

  4. Joe, I also think it's intersting how death is not a cruel narrator, not what you would have expected. It's nice just to know what he's  i guess if that makes sense.

  5. I agree that it's interesting how he is neither good nor evil, nice nor mean, etc. I think that he sees his job as somewhat of a burden. I also somewhat agree that Liesel is uninteresting, but I think the fact that Death takes notice of her in particular makes her somewhat interesting. This is because he has seen so many peoples' lives and could've talked about any of them.

  6. I also thought it was interesting how Death isn't a creepy, dark, evil character, but really he has a sense of humor. That is definetly something that doesn't come to mind when you think of Death!
