Discussion #4 - Question

While reading the book, many questions have came to mind because so many interesting things happen. The one question that I keep wondering about is: Why did the author choose to have Death as the narrator? Why did Death keep talking about colors? I can think of a few answers and I know Death adds to the gloominess of the books setting, but some other thoughts would be great.

  1. I was wondering the same thing about the colors. I thought a lot about what connections the colors could have had with Liesel or her life at all, and i honestly don't think we will know what that part is supposed to mean until the end. There is also always the possibility that the colors dont mean anything, and that they were just a way to introduce the author, Death, to us as readers.

  2. I was also curious about the colors. Like katie said, they could mean nothing, but i think that later in the book we will find out what they mean. Maybe they will play a part in connecting everyone in the story. I really want to find out and I am hoping that we do find out a reason! As for Death being the narrator I think he was chosen because it is unique and is very appropriate for this story.

  3. I was also wondering about the colors. Colors are what remind death of all the different deaths that he has taken part in. Colors are the mood of the death almost, and he can remember if it was a happy or sad death. The Colors in relation to the story don’t have a ton of importance yet, but I am guessing that they will continue to come up.

  4. Death I think provides a good contrast to the very blatant feeling of the war. He is able to make, at least me, as a reader ponder his word choice and descriptions. I think this is a nice change of pace compared to the usual straightforward WWII novel.

  5. I think the colors show how Death wants to be human and he is getting sick of what he does every day.He never really says he wants to be human, but the reader can understand it.

  6. I agree with Katharine about how the colors show that Death is interested in humans. I'd even say that he becomes jealous of the humans because they have something laying out in front of them but he doesn't. They have motivation to live and even the option to stop living, but he has neither. This makes him an almost tragic character.

  7. Death talks about colors all the time because Death is trying to find a way to distract themself from the tragedy that they have to face every minute of every day. By focusing on the colors, Death doesn't have to deal with the fact that all they do is pick up souls. The colors are just a way out.
